The first generation of the Subaru Impreza was introduced on March 1, 1993 with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions in either the four-door sedan or five-door hatchback body style with 1.8L or 2.0L engines. The WRX versions, which initially stood for “World Rally Cross” and “World Rally eXperimental,” featured rally-inspired technology, including all-wheel drive, turbocharged engines, and stiffer suspensions. The second generation was introduced in 2000 with a larger size vehicle and a more powerful engine. The third generation was presented at the New York Auto Show in 2007, showing off the newer naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines for the WRX models. It had a slightly longer wheelbase and a wider body. The fourth generation of the Impreza/WRX was unveiled at the New York International Autoshow in 2011 and was available for sale in the United States in early 2012. The new models were lighter and more fuel-efficient. Wilwood has designed brakes for both the Impreza and WRX models to improve the braking capabilities.
