Many off-road racers have a designated Prerunner they use to learn a race course in advance of the real race. They will take notes and educate the drivers on the terrain during the pre-run which allows them to save their primary truck for race day. The more common definition of the word “prerunner” is a 2-wheel drive truck which can be stock, but typically has a lift kit, big tires, bigger shocks, and a few off-road accessories. Most are also street legal, however, the closer the prerunner is in handling and performance to the race vehicle the better experience it is for the driver. The Baja 1000 opens for pre-running approximately four weeks before the race.
