Rock crawling is an extreme form of off-road driving using stock to highly modified vehicles to overcome obstacles. Drivers will pilot their four-wheel-drive vehicles such as trucks, Jeeps, and "buggies" over very harsh topography. Driving locations include boulders, mountain foothills, rock piles, mountain trails, or similarly difficult rugged terrain.
Rock crawling is about slow-speed, careful precise driving, and high torque generated through large gear reductions in the vehicle's drivetrain. Rock crawlers often drive up, down, and across obstacles that would appear to defy the law of gravity and seem impassable.
Rock crawling competitions range from local events to national series. These consist of 100-200 yard long courses with obstacles set up with gates, similar to a slalom ski race. You win by running the course with precision by placing every wheel where it needs to be while passing through the gates (cones) without accumulating penalty points. A driver and spotter work in combination to avoid penalties to keep their score low.
