The Chevrolet Avalanche was introduced in September 2001 and sold from 2002 to 2013, and was built on the GMT800 Silverado platform with a long wheel-base, four doors and a short bed. A "midgate" behind the second row of seats could be folded down to create a longer bed area. When folded up it created a larger cab area. This helped market the Avalanche as a "Super SUV". Besides the 5.3L and 8.1L V8 engines, a Z71 Off-Road package was also available with off-road suspension and four-wheel drive.
